Cleaning Your Appliances

Everyone wants a clean, safe, and healthy kitchen. Because many of us use kitchen appliances on a daily basis, you may be wondering how often they need to be cleaned. Here’s our list of some of the common appliances and some good, standard cleaning times for each one.

How often should I clean large appliances?

Oven

Ovens only need deep cleaning every six months or so, but we do tend to spill and splatter food. When this happens, you should try and clean the food up as soon as possible. The longer food bakes on, the harder it will be to get out of the oven. Plus, the spilled food can cause smoking and unpleasant smells with every use.

Stovetop

Just like with the oven, food on the stove will dry into a crust very quickly so be sure to act fast for easier cleaning. Other than for spills or splattering, you only need to do a full scrubbing of the stovetop every few months. For gas stoves, that means removing the grates and cleaning around the burner too.

Refrigerator

You should try to prevent any possible messes or spills in your refrigerator with good organization, sealed containers, and by removing old foods. But every month, you should also take the time to wipe out any crumbs, residue, and stains. Because all the food your family eats is stored there, you want it to be clean and sanitary. As for the outside, it can be wiped down as needed.

Sink

We use our sinks for dirty dishes, food, and cleaning. It’s no wonder that we see oil and grime build up around the edges and on the drain opening. Not only does it look bad, but it can smell too. After every single use of the sink, we recommend rinsing all food and liquids down the drain. Every two weeks, you can bring out the heavy-duty chemicals for a deeper clean.

Dishwasher

Once a month, the dishwasher should have a full cleaning inside and out. While the outside only needs to be wiped, the inside needs a deeper clean to prevent clogging of the drainpipe. There are many DIY solutions for cleaning the drain including water, vinegar, and baking soda. Not cleaning the drainpipe can cause a clog and ruin the effectiveness of your dishwasher.

How often should I clean small appliances?

Garbage Disposal

The garbage disposal collects nasty food scraps, mildew, and mold. When buildup occurs, you can sometimes smell nasty odors coming from your sink drain. Your disposal also may have trouble working at full power. To fix this, try simple DIY solutions every week to clean your garbage disposal such as grinding ice or soaking with baking soda.

Coffee Maker

The outside of your coffee maker should be wiped down as a part of regular kitchen cleaning. As for the inside, we recommend deep cleaning about once a month. Many coffee makers also have recommended cleaning times in their manuals and cleaning treatments might be sold for that product.

Microwave

The longer you wait to clean your microwave, the more difficult it will be. Simple weekly steam cleanings will make it easy to wipe out.

Blender

Your blender should be washed with soap and hot water after every use. You can also do a deeper clean every few uses or as needed.

Toaster

Most toasters have trays that are meant to catch crumbs. It should be emptied out every week to a month depending on how often the toaster is used. You may also want to flip your toaster upside and shake it over the garbage can to make sure all crumbs are gone.

Pressure Cookers and Croc Pots

Cooking pot appliances should be cleaned after every single use. The removable pot should be washed with soap and water while any splatters can be wiped off the outside of the machine. After every few uses, you may want to run it through the dishwasher for a more thorough cleaning.

Why You Should Keep Up With Cleaning Kitchen Appliances

Cleaning appliances on a regular basis has a lot of benefits from enjoying a clean kitchen environment to protecting the health of your family. Plus, the more often these appliances are cleaned, the less buildup there will be to scrub away the next time. But there’s another reason for cleaning appliances that many of us don’t consider: it’s a part of care and maintenance. Appliances that are properly washed will likely last longer and can continue doing their job with full efficiency. Turns out, cleaning can actually save you money too!
